Water-based exercise can help people with arthritis improve the use of their arthritic joints, decrease pain, and not worsen symptoms. People with rheumatoid arthritis have shown more health improvements after participating in hydrotherapy (exercising in warm water) than with other activities. </p> \n <p>For people with fibromyalgia, swimming can decrease anxiety, and exercise therapy in warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Parents of children with developmental disabilities find that recreational activities, such as swimming, improve family connections. </p> \n <p>Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving their quality of life and decreasing disability. It can also improve or help maintain the bone health of post-menopausal women. </p> \n <h3>Staying healthy and safe while you swim</h3> \n <p>To stay healthy and safe while you swim, it is important to understand how to prevent illness and injury when you are in or around the water. </p> \n <p>You can get swimming-related illnesses if you swallow, have contact with, or breathe in mists of water contaminated with germs. The most common swimming-related illnesses are <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/preventing-diarrheal-illnesses.html\">diarrhea</a>, <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/preventing-hot-tub-rash.html\">skin rashes</a>, <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/preventing-swimmers-ear.html\">swimmer's ear</a>, <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/preventing-legionella-from-hot-tubs.html\">pneumonia or flu-like illness</a>, and <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/preventing-eye-irritation-from-pool-chemicals.html\">irritation of the eyes or respiratory tract</a>.</p> \n <p>Learn more about what you can do to prevent these illnesses when you swim and how to protect yourself depending on where you go (pool, hot tub, splash pad, ocean, etc.)</p> \n <div> \n <div data-post=\"1413_60\"> \n <div> \n <a href=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/index.html\" title=\"Preventing Swimming-related Illnesses\"><img src=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/media/images/GettyImages864453772.jpg\" alt=\"Two girls swimming together in the water.\" title=\"\u2014 title missing \u2014\"></a> \n </div> \n <div> \n <p><a href=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/prevention/index.html\">Preventing Swimming-related Illnesses</a></p> \n <div>\n Learn how to prevent swimmer's ear, Crypto, hot tub rash, and other swimming-related illnesses. \n </div> \n <time>Jan. 9, 2024</time> \n </div> \n </div> \n <div data-post=\"1413_49\"> \n <div> \n <a href=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/safety/index.html\" title=\"Guidelines for Healthy and Safe Swimming\"><img src=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/media/images/2024/04/GettyImages-508254394.jpg\" alt=\"Mom in the pool with her arms around her young daughters who are on either side of her.\" title=\"Mom and daughters in pool\"></a> \n </div> \n <div> \n <p><a href=\"http://www.cdc.gov/healthy-swimming/safety/index.html\">Guidelines for Healthy and Safe Swimming</a></p> \n <div>\n Ensure health and safety in and around pools, hot tubs, splash pads, oceans, lakes, and rivers. \n </div> \n <time>Apr. 9, 2024</time> \n </div> \n </div> \n </div> \n <h3>Keeping your pool and hot tub clean</h3> \n <p>Having pool or hot tub can be a fun way to be active or just relax.
