Outdoors, molds can be found in shady, damp areas, or places where leaves or other vegetation is decomposing. Indoor molds can grow on virtually any surface, as long as moisture, oxygen, and organic material are present. When molds are disturbed, they release tiny cells called spores into the surrounding air.</p> \n  <h4 autofocus=\"true\">How do people get exposed to mold?</h4> \n  <p>People are exposed to molds every day and everywhere, at home, at work, at school, both indoors and out. Molds are generally not harmful to healthy humans.</p> \n  <p>Inhalation is considered the primary way that people are exposed to mold. Mold spores and fragments can become airborne and get into the air we breathe. People may also be exposed to mold through the skin. Workers should be properly protected with safety equipment when remediating, or <span><a href=\"https://tools.niehs.nih.gov/wetp/index.cfm?id=327\" target=\"_blank\">cleaning up mold after a disaster</a></span>. In some cases, people may be exposed to mold through their diet.</p> \n  <div> \n   <div> \n    <h4>Join an asthma study!</h4> \n    <div> \n     <p>The goal of the <a href=\"https://joinastudy.niehs.nih.gov/studies/nhales/index.htm\" title=\"NHALES: Asthma Study\">Natural History of Asthma with Longitudinal Environmental Sampling (NHALES)</a> study is to help scientists understand how bacteria and other factors in the environment affect people who have moderate to severe asthma.</p> \n     <p>Who can participate?</p> \n     <ul> \n      <li>Moderate to severe asthmatics.</li> \n      <li>Males and females, aged 18-60.</li> \n      <li>Females should not be pregnant or breastfeeding at the start of the study, but may still participate if they become pregnant during the study.</li> \n      <li>Nonsmokers who are also not around significant amounts of secondhand smoke.</li> \n      <li>No history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, cystic fibrosis (CF), pulmonary fibrosis, non-CF bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, unstable angina, or pulmonary hypertension.</li> \n      <li>Not allergic to methacholine.</li> \n      <li>Able to provide your own transportation to clinic visits on the NIEHS campus in North Carolina. <br><br>For more information about this study: <a href=\"mailto:nhales@mail.nih.gov\"><br></a> \n       <dl> \n        <dt> \n         <strong> NHALES: Asthma Study </strong> \n        </dt> \n        <dd>\n          Tel 855-MYNIEHS (855-696-4347) \n         <br> \n         <a href=\"mailto:nhales@mail.nih.gov\">nhales@mail.nih.gov</a> \n        </dd> \n        <dd> \n        </dd> \n       </dl> </li> \n     </ul> \n    </div> \n   </div> \n  </div> \n  <h4>What are the most common forms of mold?</h4> \n  <p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common indoor molds are:</p> \n  <ul> \n   <li>Cladosporium</li> \n   <li>Penicillium</li> \n   <li><span><a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/aspergillosis/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Aspergillus</a></span></li> \n   <li>Alternaria</li> \n   <li><span><a href=\"https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/htdocs/chem_background/exsumpdf/stachybotrys_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Stachybotrys chartarum</a></span> (also known as black mold)</li> \n  </ul> \n  <h4>What are some of the health effects associated with mold exposure?</h4> \n  <p>Symptoms stemming from mold spore exposure may include:</p> \n  <ul> \n   <li>Nasal and sinus congestion</li> \n   <li>Eye irritation</li> \n   <li>Blurred vision</li> \n   <li>Sore throat</li> \n   <li>Chronic cough</li> \n   <li>Skin rash</li> \n  </ul> \n  <p>After contact with certain molds, individuals with chronic respiratory disease may have difficulty breathing, and people who are immunocompromised may be at increased risk for lung infection.
