Like many women who are abused, women with disabilities are usually abused by someone they know, such as a partner or family member.</p> \n  <h2>How can I recognize signs of abuse in a loved one with a disability?</h2> \n  <p>Relatives must be strong advocates for their loved ones with disabilities. If you have a relative with a disability, learn the signs of abuse, especially if your relative has trouble communicating.</p> \n  <p>Report abuse to adult protective services if you notice any of the following with a loved one who has a disability:</p> \n  <ul> \n   <li>Suddenly being unable to meet essential day-to-day living needs that affect health, safety, or well-being</li> \n   <li>Lack of contact with friends or family</li> \n   <li>Visible handprints or bruising on the face, neck, arms, or wrists</li> \n   <li>Burns, cuts, or puncture wounds</li> \n   <li>Unexplained sprains, fractures, or dislocations</li> \n   <li>Signs of injuries to internal organs, such as vomiting</li> \n   <li>Wearing torn, stained, soiled, or bloody clothing</li> \n   <li>Appearing hungry, malnourished, disoriented, or confused</li> \n  </ul> \n  <p>Each state has an adult protective services agency. <a href=\"http://www.napsa-now.org/get-help/help-in-your-area/\" title=\"Help In Your Area\">Use this online map to find help in your area.</a></p> \n  <h2>How common is violence or abuse against women with disabilities?</h2> \n  <p>Women with a disability are more likely to experience violence or abuse compared to women without a disability.<a href=\"#syn<sup>2</sup>\"><sup>2</sup></a> Some studies show that women with a disability may be more likely to experience violence or abuse by a current or former partner compared to women without disabilities.<a href=\"#syn<sup>1,3</sup>\"><sup>1,3</sup></a></p> \n  <h2>Who commits violence or abuse against women with disabilities?</h2> \n  <p>Most often, violence or abuse against women with disabilities is by their spouses or partners.
