Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of sugars and starches by yeast. Alcohol is also found in some medicines, mouthwashes, and household products (including vanilla extract and other flavorings). This fact sheet focuses on cancer risks associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages.</p> \n       <p>According to the <a href=\"https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohols-effects-health/overview-alcohol-consumption/what-standard-drink\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism</a> (NIAAA), a standard alcoholic drink in the United States contains 14.0 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in:</p> \n       <ul> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e2be7020dbcbbd961e29b947da88cf2ef\">12 ounces of beer (a standard bottle)</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"eabe0fc346dcd1c008f2b0ccd9bd9bc0e\">8\u201310 ounces of malt liquor (a standard serving size)</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"eff099c8ef11d6716fb78efc46d316e05\">5 ounces of wine (a typical glass)</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e19101b8bec58a8891fe152993f8da92d\">1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor or distilled spirits (a \"shot\")</li> \n       </ul> \n       <p>These amounts are used by public health experts in developing health guidelines about alcohol consumption and to provide a way for people to compare the amounts of alcohol they consume. However, they may not reflect the typical serving sizes people may encounter in daily life.</p> \n       <p>The federal government\u2019s <a href=\"https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/sites/default/files/2021-03/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans-2020-2025.pdf\"><em>Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020\u20132025</em></a> does not recommend that individuals who do not drink alcohol start drinking for any reason. The Dietary Guidelines also recommend that people who drink alcohol do so in moderation, by limiting consumption to two drinks or less in a day for men and one drink or less in a day for women, on days when alcohol is consumed.&nbsp;</p> \n       <p><a href=\"https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohols-effects-health/alcohol-drinking-patterns\">NIAAA</a> defines heavy alcohol drinking as having four or more drinks on any day or eight or more drinks per week for women and five or more drinks on any day or 15 or more drinks per week for men. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (men), or four or more drinks (women), in about 2 hours. All binge drinking is considered harmful.</p> \n       <p>A recent <a href=\"https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/oash-alcohol-cancer-risk.pdf\">Surgeon General\u2019s Advisory</a> has called for reconsidering the recommended limits for alcohol in the US Dietary Guidelines to account for the increased risk of cancer that is associated with consumption of alcohol at or below the guideline levels.</p> \n      </div> \n     </div> \n    </section> \n    <section itemscope=\"\" itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Question\" aria-labelledby=\"does-alcohol-drinking-cause-cancer\"> \n     <h2 itemprop=\"name\"> <p>Does alcohol drinking cause cancer?</p> </h2> \n     <div itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Answer\"> \n      <div itemprop=\"text\"> \n       <p>There is strong scientific evidence that alcohol drinking can cause cancer (<a href=\"#r1\">1</a>, <a href=\"#r2\">2</a>). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified alcohol as a Group 1 <a data-gloss-id=\"46486\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46486\">carcinogen</a> (cancer-causing substance) in 1987 due to sufficient evidence that it causes cancers of the <a data-gloss-id=\"389464\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/389464\">oral cavity</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"46061\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46061\">pharynx</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"46026\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46026\">larynx</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"46408\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46408\">esophagus</a>, and <a data-gloss-id=\"46312\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46312\">liver</a> in people. The National Toxicology Program has listed consumption of alcoholic beverages as a known human carcinogen in its <a href=\"https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/content/profiles/alcoholicbeverageconsumption.pdf\">Report on Carcinogens</a> since the ninth edition, in 2000.</p> \n       <p>Epidemiologic studies have shown that people who drink alcohol are at higher risk of certain cancers than those who do not drink alcohol and that the more someone drinks, the higher the risk of these cancers. Even light drinkers can be at increased risk of some cancers. For example, women who have just one drink per day have a higher risk of <a data-gloss-id=\"444971\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/444971\">breast cancer</a> than those who have less than one drink a week, and risk is increased even more in heavy drinkers and binge drinkers (<a href=\"#r3\">3</a>-<a href=\"#r7\">7</a>).</p> \n       <p>Alcohol consumption was responsible for about 5%\u2014or nearly 100,000\u2014of the 1.8 million cancer cases diagnosed in the United States in 2019 and about 4%\u2014or nearly 25,000\u2014of the 600,000 US cancer deaths that year (<a href=\"#r8\">8</a>). By contrast, for a more common cancer, such as breast cancer, even a small relative risk can translate into a large absolute risk.&nbsp;</td> \n          </tr> \n         </tbody> \n        </table> \n       </div> \n       <div> \n        <div data-langcode=\"en\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"d9bfcc46-58d8-4dbf-9229-ac92daa21272\" data-embed-button=\"cgov_infographic_button\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.infographic_display_article_medium\" data-entity-embed-display-settings=\"[]\"> \n         <div> \n          <div> \n           <figure> \n            <img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https://www.cancer.gov/sites/www/files/styles/cgov_article/public/cgov_infographic/2025-05/CGOV-23444_Cancers-Associated-with-Drinking-Alcohol-Infographic-Update-052025_V1.jpg?itok=izPSBdd8\" width=\"970\" height=\"1594\" alt=\"The graphic shows sites in the body where alcohol-caused cancers can form\"> \n           </figure> \n           <div> \n            <a href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/sites/www/files/styles/cgov_enlarged/public/cgov_infographic/2025-05/CGOV-23444_Cancers-Associated-with-Drinking-Alcohol-Infographic-Update-052025_V1.jpg?itok=WBR1vJKr\" data-link_title=\"Cancers Associated with Drinking Alcohol\" target=\"_blank\">View and Print Infographic</a> \n           </div> \n          </div> \n         </div> \n        </div> \n       </div> \n       <p>Using data from Australia, recalculated using US standard drinks, the recent <a href=\"https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/oash-alcohol-cancer-risk.pdf\">Surgeon General\u2019s Advisory</a> reports that</p> \n       <ul> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e76571073e781f25c5d4583203b085c5e\">among 100 women who have less than one drink per week, about 17 will develop an alcohol-related cancer</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e3cd4aa8c1008758b6db53255426adffa\">among 100 women who have one drink a day, 19 will develop an alcohol-related cancer</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"ed0dafa8c741d9449f86e33a4a3db36e9\">among 100 women who have two drinks a day, about 22 will develop an alcohol-related cancer</li> \n       </ul> \n       <p>This means that women who have one drink a day have an absolute increase in the risk of an alcohol-related cancer of 2 per 100, and those who have two drinks a day an absolute increase of 5 per 100, compared with those who have less than one drink a week. For men, the number of alcohol-related cancers per 100 is 10 for those who have less than one drink a week, 11 for those who have one drink a day (an increase of 1 per 100), and 13 for those who have two drinks a day (an increase of 3 per 100).</p> \n       <p>Some evidence suggests that alcohol consumption may also be associated with increased risks of <a data-gloss-id=\"45135\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45135\">melanoma</a> and of <a data-gloss-id=\"44074\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/44074\">pancreatic</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"46539\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46539\">prostate</a>, and <a data-gloss-id=\"46604\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46604\">stomach</a> cancers (<a href=\"#r4\">4</a>, <a href=\"#r14\">14</a>). However, for cancers of the <a data-gloss-id=\"46501\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46501\">bladder</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"46687\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46687\">ovary</a>, and <a data-gloss-id=\"46645\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46645\">uterus</a>, either no association with alcohol use has been found or the evidence for an association is inconsistent.</p> \n       <p>Alcohol consumption has also been associated with decreased risks of <a data-gloss-id=\"46325\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46325\">kidney</a> cancers (<a href=\"#r15\">15</a>\u2013<a href=\"#r17\">17</a>), <a data-gloss-id=\"445091\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/445091\">thyroid cancer</a> (<a href=\"#r18\">18</a>, <a href=\"#r19\">19</a>), and <a data-gloss-id=\"45148\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45148\">non-Hodgkin lymphoma</a> (<a href=\"#r20\">20</a>\u2013<a href=\"#r22\">22</a>) in multiple studies. Recent evidence suggests that acetaldehyde production also occurs in the oral cavity and may be influenced by factors such as the oral microbiome (<a href=\"#r28\">28</a>, <a href=\"#r29\">29</a>).</p> \n       <p>Many individuals of East Asian descent have a \"superactive\" form of ADH that speeds the conversion of alcohol (ethanol) to <a data-gloss-id=\"43986\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/43986\">toxic</a> acetaldehyde. Among people of Japanese ancestry, those who have this form of ADH have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those with the more common form of ADH (<a href=\"#r30\">30</a>).</p> \n       <p>Another enzyme, called aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), metabolizes toxic acetaldehyde to nontoxic substances. Some people, also particularly those of East Asian descent, have a form of this enzyme that causes acetaldehyde to build up when they drink alcohol.
