CDC recommends the HPV vaccine for (<a href=\"#r3\">3</a>):</p> \n       <ul> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e1e7b64e277b40663306726fec6fb2156\"><strong>Children and adults ages 9 through 26 years.</strong> HPV vaccination is routinely recommended at age 11 or 12 years; vaccination can be started at age 9. HPV vaccination is recommended for all persons through age 26 for those who were not adequately vaccinated earlier.&nbsp;</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"e68fbdfb101c142da356c5cf870f74f94\"><strong>Adults ages 27 through 45.</strong> Although the HPV vaccine is approved by the <a data-gloss-id=\"454785\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/454785\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration</a> (FDA) to be given through age 45, HPV vaccination is not recommended for routine administration to adults ages 27 through 45. Instead, clinicians can consider discussing with patients in this age group who were not adequately vaccinated earlier whether HPV vaccination is right for them. HPV vaccination in this age range provides less benefit because more people have already been exposed to the virus.&nbsp;</li> \n        <li data-list-item-id=\"edbe384b5251868e47e2c7ebd731bfc51\"><strong>Pregnant women.</strong> HPV vaccination should be delayed until after pregnancy, but pregnancy testing is not required before vaccination. In addition to protection against HPV infection and precancer, real-world data have now shown that the vaccine greatly reduces the incidence of cancer (<a href=\"#r5\">5</a>).</p> \n       <p>To date, vaccine protection against infections with the targeted HPV types has been found to last for more than a decade.</p> \n      </div> \n     </div> \n    </section> \n    <section itemscope=\"\" itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Question\" aria-labelledby=\"how-does-the-hpv-vaccine-work\"> \n     <h2 itemprop=\"name\"> <p>How does the HPV vaccine work?</p> </h2> \n     <div itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Answer\"> \n      <div itemprop=\"text\"> \n       <p>Like other <a data-gloss-id=\"44577\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/44577\">immunizations</a> that guard against viral infection, the HPV vaccine stimulates the body to produce <a data-gloss-id=\"44918\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/44918\">antibodies</a> that, in future encounters with HPV, bind to the virus and prevent it from infecting <a data-gloss-id=\"46476\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46476\">cells</a>. In other words, the vaccine-induced <a data-gloss-id=\"44918\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/44918\">antibodies</a> prevent HPV infections.</p> \n       <p>The current HPV vaccine is based on <a data-gloss-id=\"686209\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/686209\">virus-like particles</a> (VLPs) that are formed by HPV surface components. VLPs are not infectious because they lack the <a data-gloss-id=\"45941\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45941\">virus</a>\u2019 <a data-gloss-id=\"45671\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45671\">DNA</a>. However, they closely resemble the outer surface of the natural virus. The VLPs have been found to be strongly immunogenic, which means that they induce high levels of antibody production by the body. This makes the vaccine highly effective.</p> \n       <p>The vaccine does not prevent other sexually transmitted diseases, nor treat existing HPV infections or HPV-caused disease.</p> \n      </div> \n     </div> \n    </section> \n    <section itemscope=\"\" itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Question\" aria-labelledby=\"why-is-hpv-vaccination-important\"> \n     <h2 itemprop=\"name\"> <p>Why is HPV vaccination important?</p> </h2> \n     <div itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Answer\"> \n      <div itemprop=\"text\"> \n       <p>The combination of HPV vaccination and cervical screening can provide the greatest protection against <a data-gloss-id=\"444973\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/444973\">cervical cancer</a>. Also, HPV vaccination reduces the <a data-gloss-id=\"789737\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/789737\">prevalence</a> of HPV at sites other than the cervix for which there is no population screening methods.</p> \n       <p>Not only does vaccination protect vaccinated individuals against infection by the HPV types targeted by the vaccine but vaccination can also reduce the prevalence of the vaccine-targeted HPV types in the population, thereby reducing infection in individuals who are not vaccinated (a phenomenon called herd protection). For example, in U.S., as female vaccination rates increased, prevalence of oral HPV infections in males decreased, indicating <a data-gloss-id=\"799187\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/799187\">herd immunity</a> (<a href=\"#r6\">6</a>).</p> \n       <p>Widespread HPV vaccination has the potential to reduce cervical cancer incidence around the world by as much as 90%. In addition, the vaccines may reduce the need for screening and subsequent medical care, <a data-gloss-id=\"45164\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45164\">biopsies</a>, and <a data-gloss-id=\"257210\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/257210\">invasive procedures</a> associated with follow-up from abnormal cervical screening, thus helping to reduce health care costs and anxieties related to follow-up procedures. Already, the incidence of cervical cancer has declined in the United States.</p> \n       <p>HPV vaccination is also very important to prevent other HPV-associated caners such as <a data-gloss-id=\"446523\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/446523\">oropharyngeal</a>, <a data-gloss-id=\"44776\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/44776\">vulvar</a>, and <a data-gloss-id=\"444966\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/444966\">anal cancers</a>, whose incidence have been increasing.
