These can be found in the blood, urine, <a data-gloss-id=\"46605\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/46605\">stool</a>, tumors, or other tissues or bodily fluids of some patients with cancer.&nbsp;</p> \n       <p>Increasingly, however, genomic markers (such as tumor gene mutations, patterns of tumor <a data-gloss-id=\"537335\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/537335\">gene expression</a>, and nongenetic changes in tumor DNA) are being used as tumor markers. These markers are found both in tumors themselves and in tumor fragments shed into bodily fluids.&nbsp;</p> \n       <p>Many different tumor markers have been characterized and <a href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/diagnosis-staging/diagnosis/tumor-markers-list\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"c11cf1dc-e8d0-4d1d-9689-bf4c75fca53b\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\">are in clinical use</a>. However, having an elevated level of a tumor marker does not mean that someone has cancer. Noncancerous conditions can sometimes cause an increase in the level of a tumor marker. In addition, not everyone with a particular type of cancer will have a higher level of a tumor marker associated with that cancer. Therefore, measurements of tumor markers are usually combined with the results of other tests, such as <a data-gloss-id=\"45164\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45164\">biopsies</a> or imaging, to diagnose cancer. </li> \n        <li>The type of cancer</li> \n        <li>The <a data-gloss-id=\"45885\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45885\">stage</a> of the cancer</li> \n        <li>An estimate of <a data-gloss-id=\"45849\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/45849\">prognosis</a></li> \n        <li>What treatment may be effective. Tumor markers that indicate whether someone is a candidate for a particular <a data-gloss-id=\"270742\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/270742\">targeted therapy</a> are sometimes referred to as <a href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/biomarker-testing-cancer-treatment\">biomarkers for cancer treatment</a>. Biomarkers are generally measured in samples of tumor tissue. However, tumors can shed cells or bits of biological material into blood, and these can be measured by tests called <a data-gloss-id=\"779095\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/779095\">liquid biopsies</a>. </li> \n        <li>How well the treatment is working. Periodic (or \u201cserial\u201d) measurements of a marker made while someone is undergoing treatment can indicate whether the tumor is responding to treatment.</li> \n        <li>Whether cancer has returned. Sometimes cancer centers use a tumor marker test developed within a single clinical laboratory (also known as a lab-developed test or LDT) to meet a specific medical need. All tumor markers, <a href=\"https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/in-vitro-diagnostics/laboratory-developed-tests\">including those tested by LDTs</a>, are tested in laboratories that meet standards set by the <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/clia/\">Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments</a>&nbsp;program.</p> \n      </div> \n     </div> \n    </section> \n    <section itemscope=\"\" itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Question\" aria-labelledby=\"can-tumor-markers-be-used-to-detect-cancer-in-people-who-dont-have-symptoms\"> \n     <h2 itemprop=\"name\"> <p>Can tumor markers be used to detect cancer in people who don't have symptoms?</p> </h2> \n     <div itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Answer\"> \n      <div itemprop=\"text\"> \n       <p>Because tumors produce markers that can be measured in blood and other body fluids, researchers have hoped that they might also be useful in screening people for cancer\u2014that is, detecting cancer at an early stage before it causes symptoms.</p> \n       <p>However, studies to see whether circulating tumor markers can be used to screen for cancer have generally found that these markers do not work well for screening. They often don\u2019t identify everyone with the disease (they are not sensitive enough). Or they may indicate the possible presence of cancer in people who don\u2019t actually have cancer (they are not specific enough).</p> \n       <p>Researchers are now testing whether <a data-gloss-id=\"807089\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/807089\">multi-cancer detection tests</a>&nbsp;(MCDs), which analyze multiple biomarkers in the blood of people without symptoms, can identify early cancers.</p> \n       <p>Most MCDs examine DNA that tumor cells release into blood. They may also analyze other biological molecules in blood, such as proteins. Tests that look at tumor markers in blood and other body fluids are sometimes called <a data-gloss-id=\"779095\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/779095\">liquid biopsy</a> tests.</p> \n       <p>Although many MCD tests are in development and several are already being marketed, much remains to be learned about how best to use these tests and their harms and benefits. A critical question is whether treating the cancers identified by MCD tests would reduce deaths from these cancers. NCI will be launching <a href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2022/finding-cancer-early-mced-tests\">a clinical trial to better understand the implications of using MCD tests to screen for cancer</a>.</p> \n      </div> \n     </div> \n    </section> \n    <section itemscope=\"\" itemprop=\"mainEntity\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Question\" aria-labelledby=\"what-research-is-under-way-to-develop-additional-tumor-markers\"> \n     <h2 itemprop=\"name\"> <p>What research is under way to develop additional tumor markers?</p> </h2> \n     <div itemscope itemprop=\"acceptedAnswer\" itemtype=\"https://schema.org/Answer\"> \n      <div itemprop=\"text\"> \n       <p>NCI\u2019s <a href=\"https://edrn.nci.nih.gov/\">Early Detection Research Network </a>(EDRN), a collaborative consortium of academic and private-sector investigators, has focused on the systematic discovery, development, and validation of biomarkers and imaging methods to detect early-stage cancers and to assess risk for developing cancer. One goal of EDRN is to develop biomarkers that can distinguish aggressive early-stage cancers from slow-growing cancers that would never cause symptoms to reduce <a data-gloss-id=\"759896\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/759896\">overtreatment</a>.&nbsp;</p> \n       <p>Cancer researchers are turning to <a data-gloss-id=\"306524\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/306524\">proteomics</a> (the study of protein structure, function, and patterns of expression) and <a data-gloss-id=\"790750\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/790750\">proteogenomics</a> (the integration of proteomics with genomics and gene expression analysis, or <a data-gloss-id=\"770608\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/770608\">transcriptomics</a>) with the hope of developing novel biomarkers that can be used to identify cancer in its early stages, to predict the effectiveness of treatment, and to predict the chance of cancer recurrence.</p> \n       <p><a data-gloss-id=\"800823\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/800823\">Artificial intelligence</a> and <a data-gloss-id=\"805417\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/805417\">machine learning</a> are increasingly being investigated, including by EDRN, as tools to analyze and interpret patterns in genomic and proteomic markers that help predict cancer risk and diagnose specific cancer types.</p> \n       <p>NCI\u2019s <a href=\"https://proteomics.cancer.gov/programs/cptac\">Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium</a> (CPTAC) is using a proteogenomic approach for tumor marker discovery for a growing number of cancers, including colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancers. By systematically identifying proteins (and associated biological processes) that originate from alterations in cancer genomes, CPTAC researchers have discovered new tumor subtypes, <a data-gloss-id=\"561725\" data-gloss-dictionary=\"Cancer.gov\" data-gloss-audience=\"Patient\" data-gloss-lang=\"en\" href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/561725\">tumor microenvironment</a> variations, and new potential proteins for targeted drug therapy. Recent innovations have <a href=\"https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2020/proteogenomic-core-needle-biopsy-breast\">suggested that these analyses could be done on a microscale</a> using very small amounts of tumor tissue obtain from a biopsy.</p> \n       <p>The NCI <a href=\"https://moonshotbiobank.cancer.gov/\">Cancer Moonshot<sup>SM</sup> Biobank</a> is working with patient participants at community hospitals around the country to encourage them to donate tissue and blood samples over the course of their cancer treatment.
