One study reported that breast cancer survivors who took part in enjoyable physical activity had less fatigue and pain and were better able to take part in daily activities. Another study showed that people with breast cancer who engaged in light exercise, such as walking or household chores, for 30 minutes per day felt more motivation to exercise, and those who did 30 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous exercise, such as brisk walking or swimming, felt less fatigued mentally and physically.
\n
In clinical trials, some people with cancer reported the following benefits from exercise:
\n
\n
\n
More physical energy.
\n
Better appetite.
\n
Better memory.
\n
More able to do the normal activities of daily living.
\n
Better quality of life.
\n
More enjoyment with life.
\n
A greater sense of well-being.
\n
\n
\n
Moderate activity for 3 to 5 hours a week may help cancer fatigue. You are more likely to follow an exercise plan if you choose a type of exercise that you enjoy. Your healthcare team can help you plan the best time and place for exercise and how often to exercise. You may need to start with light activity for short periods of time and build up to more exercise little by little. The PDQ database contains summaries of the latest published information on cancer prevention, detection, genetics, treatment, supportive care, and complementary and alternative medicine. Most summaries come in two versions. The health professional versions have detailed information written in technical language. The patient versions are written in easy-to-understand, nontechnical language. Both versions have cancer information that is accurate and up to date and most versions are also available in Spanish.
\n
PDQ is a service of the NCI. The NCI is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is the federal government\u2019s center of biomedical research. The PDQ summaries are based on an independent review of the medical literature. They are not policy statements of the NCI or the NIH.
\n
\n
\n
Purpose of This Summary
\n
This PDQ cancer information summary has current information about the causes and treatment of fatigue. Trials are based on past studies and what has been learned in the laboratory. Each trial answers certain scientific questions in order to find new and better ways to help cancer patients. During treatment clinical trials, information is collected about the effects of a new treatment and how well it works. If a clinical trial shows that a new treatment is better than one currently being used, the new treatment may become \"standard.\" Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.
\n
Clinical trials can be found online at NCI's website.
